Madagascar Shock DRC 4-2, book AFCON Quarter Finals Ticket

The Bareau of Madagascar have sensationally sealed their place in the quarter finals of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations after a 4-2 win on penalties against DR Congo on Sunday, completesports.com reports.

After a 2-2 score at full and extra time, the tie had to be decided on the luxury of spot kicks, with the debuting Indian Ocean Island team who pelted a 2-0 defeat to Super Eagles in their last group B match converting all their first four kicks and Congo missing two of their first four kicks.

Sunday night’s win for the Barea just adds to the surprises that has characterised the AFCON tournament in Egypt.

Madagascar made the first breakthrough nine minutes after kick off, with Amanda finding the DRC back of the net to send the stadium alive.

But their lead was short lived as Bakambu restored parity for Congo on 21 minutes to ensure both sides went into the halftime break on level terms.

The restart saw Congo in more dominant fashion but it was Madagascar’s Andriatsima who restored his side’s advantage and they defended stoutly in numbers to ensure they finished things in normal time.

But DR Congo relentless expedition in their opponents territory paid off on the dot of 90 minutes when Mbamba fetched the much sought equaliser to ensure the game stretched into extra time.

Ironically, there was not to be any tie breaker within the extra time with both teams going into penalty kicks.

Madagascar converted all their first four kicks while DR Congo scored two and missed two, a development that sent Madagascar to the quarters in their debut Nations Cup appearance.
